Well, I'm happy that you're doing a little reading on the subject.

If you've read the articles on the website you mentioned then you'll also have read that mpingo cracks quite readily as it dries -- which actually supports my argument. Wood dries from the outside first. As it begins to dry there is a moisture differential from the outside (the drier part) to the inside (the wetter part). The outside shinks more than the inside which causes stress in the wood that is relieved by cracking. It's not that complicated.

Furthermore, the seasoning of wood is a drying process. If moisture can be removed, moisture can be put back in. There is no one-way valve in the wood. Anyone who has spent enough time around oboes has seen an instrument that has dried out so much that the keywork is binding (usually on keys that are mounted on cross hinges like the Eb key, the forked-F resonance, etc.) -- a couple of days in the presence of a humidifier fixes this pretty quickly -- the key is to make sure that the oboe is humidified from the outside so as to avoid cracking.
