my son , having been playing clarinet and now new to oboe, and after being warned about GENTLY swabbing his oboe, sure enough got it good and stuck ., as it seemed to have gotten twisted in the bore. it looked as if we would have to take it to a professional repairer,
but after a couple of days of drying out , we were able to pull it back out after grabbing the string that was looped back and jammed with a crochet hook being careful not to scrape the bore. this didn't work while it was still damp. thank goodness. hopefully he remembers after this!

Just make sure you don't get any knots in the pullthrough or the string as these will bind in the bore, and if completely stuck they'll need drilling out (with a special long drill made specially for this job).
Clarinets aren't as much of a problem if the string gets knots in it, but as long as the pullthrough isn't too big (or isn't folded during use) it won't get caught on the speaker tube.
And with oboes and cors anglais, if you have two pullthroughs to go with each, make sure they're both different colours so they don't get mixed up - not a problem using the oboe pullthrough on cor, but using a cor pullthrough on oboe is a disaster.
I know which is which in my set - the oboe pullthrough is green and the cor one is blue, so no chance of getting them mixed up.

I too have an oboe swab that has a string on either end so that in case it gets stuck, you can pull it back the way it came. It has yet to get stuck. Perphaps you should invest in one? I don't remember the company name, and it has no markings on it. Ask your son's oboe teacher or music director to make some recommendations.
Best of Luck!!!

it does have a string on both sides, one string was out on top, with half the swab, the other string was looped and caught up inside with the rest of the swab, therefore the hook , .. his teacher today went over the basics of swabbing with him...hope he learned!

Here is a link to a web page for removing stuck swab. Recently, I had followed the instructions and removed the stuck swab from my oboe easily.
