Hey Corinne,

Before you jump into reedmaking, think of 2 things first:

1) Do you have the time to make your own reeds or just scrape store bought ones?
2) Do you have access to someone knowledgeable that will be able to help you out along the way?

Consider that if you buy a kit, you should think about the amount of time and quality you are looking for. I know myself, that since I bought my kit I have bought 2 more knives because the one that came with it was junk. I ended up having to throw out almost all of my shaped cane because it was poorly shaped or otherwise. Although a kit is good, if you're really looking for quality you should pick out the items seperately. Make sure that you talk to someone knowledgeable about this, because what you will need will really depend on how far you plan to go with reedmaking. A list of stuff that you should have for very basic reedmaking should include:

-knife (more than one is better)
-plaque
-ruler
-tying thread
-mandrel
-cutting block
-sharpening stone/crock sticks (I prefer the crocksticks, but you should have both if you can afford it...they're not too expensive)

the next step up would be (if you want to buy cane that's gouged instead of shaped, this is cheaper in the long run and gives you more control over quality, however make sure that you do this carefully)

-shaper tip
-shaper handle

And if you wanted to start right from the tube cane, then buy yourself a gouger and a planer (which are really expensive). However, if you're not going to very serious with it, the basics are probably fine and you can just buy shaped cane. You will also need to buy tubes/staples.

Hope this helps!

Graham
