Hi everyone,
I wanted to make a post here because I can't find anyone else with a similar experience anywhere else. Be warned this post will talk about the issues I'm having with my tongue, if that kind of thing grosses you out I suggest maybe don't read.
I've recently developed a sensitivity to (I believe) salicylates in large quantities. I get hives and rashes on my hands when I feed hay to my guinea pigs, and when I eat dates or avocadoes, my tongue becomes irritated and the top layer of skin comes off. Recently, I've noticed this has been happening to me with oboe reeds. I just spent about an hour scraping tips into some reed blanks (last minute crunching for my concert next week). I put the one I'm working on in my mouth whever I sharpen my knife, and I also test them a little by trying to get them to crow. After an hour I had to stop because the pain on my tongue was unbearable. At the tip of my tongue, where I tongue the reed, as well as the spot where the reed rests in my mouth while sharpening my knife, there are red splotches where the top layer of skin seems to have been sloughed away.
I have no idea what to do at this point. Has anyone else had this issue? Would my doctor be able to help with this? Is a plastic reed my only option?
