 Fritz Herman Schuller

Hello, everyone. I'm new to the forum. I've been playing Oboe for a little while and was hoping to ask a question of some of the more experienced pros here. I was looking at Fritz Herman Schuller Oboe this past week that is currently pretty cheap at auction, but it needs a little work. I tried to do some research and found some English horns by the same maker for over $2000, but not really anything else by this maker. Can you point me in the direction of anyone who can do an overhaul and solder on a broken key? And is there any value if I could get it for a really good price?

According to Peter Hurd of oboes.us they are an excellent maker, of oboes, although he describes the cor Anglais as being stuffy. He also says they are likely to be fully automatic, which most players, particularly in the US and virtually everywhere else in the world except some players in Europe, would rather not play ( they can be tricky to adjust, and there are a lot of different fingerings, including most harmonics, that you cannot get.) Overhauls and repairs can be very expensive, so it would also really depend on how much needed to be done. A friend bought a cor Anglais on one of the auctions only to find warping of the bore and cracks that were not detected by the seller. If you really want a good oboe, you may be lucky on the auction sites, but you are better off purchasing from someone like Hannah's Oboes, Carlos Coehlo, or one of the other people in your country ( I assume, the US) that really know what they are selling. Also recommended is Peter Hurd of oboes.us

Yes, it is in the US. Saw it on ebay for $200 which I assumed may be an excellent price, even if a few hundred dollars in repairs were needed. Thank you for this information. It is very helpful.

My last restore of an instrument cost me $2000
and you dont know what repair bill you are up for until the repairer assesses the instrument.

Never buy ANY instrument without a trial period with "right of return."
Schuller made some fine instruments, though you must evaluate each instrument
on a case-by-case basis. I have had a couple of Schuller English horns that were "stuffy." I sent the instruments out for re-voicing, and upon return they played beautifully. Full automatic octave system is NOT recommended, except perhaps for a woodwind doubler having both oboe and English horn being full automatic system...

Also think in terms of reselling when you want to move up in quality. You might be much happier spending a little more at the beginning and being able to recoup it should you decide you're ready for a higher level instrument. I was never sorry I started out with a pro instrument (which I bought used.)
