Bearing in mind that cane is a natural product and the fibres cannot be checked before the cane is split, yes this can be an issue. Occasionally I have found the same thing, and I discard the tube quite quickly and move onto the next one. I think if I try and persevere with a really hard to gouge piece, the chances of blunting the blade are increased. WHat I find also is that some tubes, once split just dont lie on the bed well, I discard those too, as even if I get a reasonable gouge, the cane is warped and the chances of making a decent reed from them is slight. The process is quite time consuming and one needs to hand select as much as possible.
