Hi,
I wonder if anyone else has had this experience. Every once in a while after I split a tube I get a piece of tube can that will NOT gouge. The inner fibers appear whitish and maybe spongy. The gouger can't seem to plane and get any shavings.

Bearing in mind that cane is a natural product and the fibres cannot be checked before the cane is split, yes this can be an issue. Occasionally I have found the same thing, and I discard the tube quite quickly and move onto the next one. I think if I try and persevere with a really hard to gouge piece, the chances of blunting the blade are increased. WHat I find also is that some tubes, once split just dont lie on the bed well, I discard those too, as even if I get a reasonable gouge, the cane is warped and the chances of making a decent reed from them is slight. The process is quite time consuming and one needs to hand select as much as possible.
