You can either do each grade or skip them, but you do need to have passed Grade 5 Theory to do Grade 6 and above.
I've only taken grades on clarinet - started on Grade 4 as my teacher thought Grade 3 was too easy (and got distinction), then had to take Grade 5 Theory (got 93/99) and then Grade 6 (merit) and 8 (distinction).
How does the American system work? I keep reading about First Chair and All State over on the clarinet board, but not sure how that equates to our grading system in the UK.
The various grades were also named:
Grade 1 - Primary
Grade 2 - Elementary
Grade 3 - Transitional
Grade 4 - Lower
Grade 5 - Higher
Grade 6 - Intermediate
Grade 7 - Advanced
Grade 8 - Final
