 Intrusive Note
Author: Barry Vincent

As of late , as in the last few months I've been noticing a problem with my a phearing. As I"m playing the Oboe , and even the Clarinet . there is this effect with what seems a certain frequency. This happens when I play an E natural (mostly) and the note seems to be right inside my head as if there is a vibration setting up within the inner ear. It's as if there is fluid in the inner ear that is affected by this frequency. Its mostly the E natural in the top space of the stave , but sometimes also the Eb as well to a certain extent. I'm going to get an appointment to have my ears checked and to see if there is excessive fluid in the ears or whatever. I'm just posting this to find out if anyone out there has experienced a similar problem with certain notes. Meanwhile , I"m also going to get a set of those 'musician ' ear plugs from "Hi Fi' to see if that helps out with the problem. I'm 72 years old now , so I guess one has to expect little problems like this now.
I've also been reading up about the Eusachian Tubes and how to release pressure within them by blocking your nose and blowing but this doesn't seem to help the problem.

Barry, it's spring time and the world is full of pollen. Having been a chronic sinusitis sufferer for many years (assuming that might be your problem), the best remedy I've found is saline rinse every couple of days using one of the over-the-counter kits. It's cheap and easy to do. I buy distilled water at the market just for this.

Hi John. Thank you for responding to my comments concerning my ear problem. Here where I"m at it's now Autumn and anyway,, I've never had a problem with pollen ect. I've now got myself earplugs that are specially made for musicians but they do not solve the problem. Interestingly , the note on the Clarinet is around the F# which means it really is a certain frequency of sound.

It's not just you. I understand what you're talking about. Playing E natural makes my ears feel weird sometimes, and sometimes Eb too if it's going sharp. I'm still young too - not a problem with age.

Hi Matt. Thanks for letting me know that I'm not alone with having this problem. Yes. Sometimes the effect does range slightly into Eb as well for me also. (or F on the Clarinet). I'll be seeing an ear specialist soon and will be trying to explain it all to them.

I've been to an ear specialist and have been tested for hearing and the results are that I have normally good hearing. However the specialist has suggested that the problem I have as I mentioned above may be some form of Hyperacrusis of which there is no cure. I have been experimenting with various kinds of ear plugs and the type that seems to reduce the intrusiveness of certain notes is the soft foam industrial ear plugs. I have inserted one of them completely into the ear channel of my right ear when I"m playing the Oboe and it seems to reduce the intrusive effect somewhat. It's the right ear that is most affected.
