I am well in learning to make reeds and came up on a very unfortunite circumstance today. I use RDG pro reeds (ya, the 21 dollar ones) and they work very well most of the time. Well this one was really sharp, and I deduced after lightly scraping the back and tip a bit that the reed was just too closed. I got some really hot water and soaked the reed for 15 minutes and it opened up... but now it was a bit flat (probably from the mild scraping). Well to make a long story short, I soaked the reed and closed the tip a bit but the reed ended up cracking , even though I have closed at least 10 reeds with no problems.
Well I had (ya had) a concert tonight, but now I don't have a reed and can not afford another RDG or could even get one (I live 70 miles each way away plus no money in the first place). I had a reed I had been scraping with me and I said well I would try and finish it. Well it was crowing a C but the reed had too problems.
1. It had a hard time starting (a little hard)
2. It has no resonance (I.e. I could not play repeated short scatatto notes)
3. It was veryy stuffy.
I tried scraping the back down a bit, the top and a little on the side of the heart and it does little good.
Ideas?
