I'll elaborate a bit...
When one plays a new "medium" strength reed after being well accustomed to their "current" medium strength reed, that new reed may seem quite hard in comparison, but it merely requires break in time.
If one were to constantly adjust a reed to play at the same strength as their current reed one will be making softer and softer reeds as time goes by.
And then when one wonders why their reeds collapse on them... it's because while you started out playing medium strengh reeds you've whiddled and weakened your embouchure to only play softer strength reeds.
On top of that if the reed were well in tune in the first place taking a knife to the reed on the first day is worst thing one could do. You can't put wood back if you find the reed becomes flat after a few days.
