 Scheherazade Orchestration

Is it really common practice to divide the second oboe/cor anglais doubling part between two players? My uni orchestra is playing this next semester, and I'm just a little confused by why the part would be split.

Cheers.

Assuming you are talking about Rimsky Korsakov and not Ravel?

The parts in IMSLP are scored for two players, second oboe doubling on CA. When CA is playing, there is no Ob. II part.

However, if you have many (inexpensive) oboists and only so many parts to go round I can imagine passing the glorious CA solo to a third player ..

In other words, it should be left to the discretion of the musical director.

It should be covered by the 2nd player doubling on both oboe and cor, but if they don't have a cor or don't like to or even want to play cor at all (and some players are like that), then the only way round that is have the regular oboe players there and then draft in a cor player just to cover that movement.

Or maybe your director wants to be more inclusive and have an extra player on cor to give them more orchestral experience. Could be a political thing as that tends to happen a lot.

Yes, I've had several ensembles in which my playing cor seemed to solve other social/political problems.

As the English horn player in our orchestra, I've often had to take on just the English horn parts of 2nd oboe/EH parts. It's slightly annoying, but it's usually when I'm already playing EH on another piece in the concert and they just have me stay to play that part. In some orchestras where you get doubling pay, it's to prevent the doubling pay if that person is already there. I'd always prefer just to play the entire part.
