Plague on the surface of the bore in side would make the ore "smaller". I thought a smaller bore (bore shrinking by old age or drying out the wood) would sharpen the pitch. The opposite, enlarging bore by the same process, would flatten the pitch. I do not know which happens normally. Middle joint of my old oboe shrunk and sharpened and had to adjust the under cuts to correct the pitch.
