Thanks for the comments. I have been relying on Martin Schuring's information on the ASU web site -- great stuff.
I have only made about 30 oboe reeds so far, using Victoria gouged, shaped and folded cane and Mark Chudnow's all metal staples. Also a dozen or so reeds for my cor.
My reeds are generally playable, but not consistent. I'm hoping to gradually improve my understanding of the process so I can get a more consistent sound and also make them a bit faster. I'm not ready to invest in the expensive equipment to do the whole reed from scratch, though I have ordered a thickness gauge.
BTW, I have been using a small ultrasonic cleaner to periodically clean the reeds, and they are seeming to last better. Not a controlled experiment, but it doesn't hurt anything at least.
