Hi Howard!
I'm so pleased to hear that somebody "idolizes" Han de Vries! He is my former teacher (I was lucky enough to be his last pupil), and I just saw him last week. He is pensionated now, but still plays. He had had quite a serious bicycle accident one month ago, so he was a bit stiff. He always likes to go on racing vacations, and this time he was in Viet-Nam. He had been warned about the steep angle of one of the descends, but still found himself flying throught the air! Anyway, he's quite ok. He was a wonderful teacher for me! He lives in this amazing historical house in Amsterdam, with his whole collection of rare (baroque) oboes and paintings - the place is like a museum! Truly inspiring to have your weekly lessons there. When I visited last week, I was surprised to see the whole room covered with paintings he had painted himself!
He told me that they are going to re-issue all his works in Great Brittain next year, so that will give everyone a chance to listen to his work! He has also recorded albinoni and telemann on the baroque oboe, which is also great.
Bye! Christopher
