I've seen mildew form on the inside of my really old reeds once I take them apart. I've never really had weird "tasting" reeds. Maybe one or two weird-smelling if you purposely sniff it. I'm guilty of often leaving reeds just on the table or in the open reed case while at home. I think once spores start growing on something it's pretty difficult to get rid of it, if at all. On occasion I'll dip all of my reeds in a diluted solution of mouth wash. I hardly know if it does anyting, but gives me a bit of piece of mind.
I've actually a few playable reeds that are YEARS old. The only time I had major mildew problem were on my baroque reeds, because I only had a few I swapped between and they were played in Toronto (hot, humid) and for a long time after returning home. Didn't taste funky, just freaked me out when I took them apart.
I know someone who puts their reeds in an ultrasonic wash after every play. I can't be bothered with that, although this person makes reeds only about twice a year! (they're bassoon reeds, so they do last much longer, though)
