Sömeone, the two main oboe types are french and vienese (as for clarinets, there are french and german types). These are different conceptions about the instrument, including the bore, length and reeds. Vienese oboes are the direct descendent of the baroc oboe. The french oboe is a complete revolution from the "ancient" instruments. Vienese oboes are played only by some 30 or 40 people in Austria, including professional and students (you can guess how difficult to find a teacher, go to Viena if you want one!)
French oboes are played worldwide. The other systems are "variations" from the Conservatory system. The most played is the half automatic with the side key for High A-Bb-B-C. Full automatic models don't use this key.
English system or thumbplate allows to play Bb and C with the left thumb instead of RH first finger. It is most used in England.
