Semi-Automatic is more common than automatic system oboes simply because the automatic octave system comes out of adjustment very easily and they extra keywork poses an even higher risk for a crack in the top joint. The automatic system is much more popular in Europe. As for the necessity of the 3rd octave key, I find it VERY useful in control of the pitch of all notes above High D above the staff, as well as more stability and ease of the notes it gives. Most americans play pleteaux( I honestly don't know hot to spell it either, lol) keyed Oboes. I find Loree oboes to be amazing. My teacher's loree is fabulous.....everytime she lets me play I wish it was mine. It's even nicer than my Fox pro! That's all I can give....I know nothing about vienese or british oboes.
