I would strongly suggest you go for the S20c+TP as that is a good spec oboe which will take you beyond Grade 8. It's a dual system oboe (conservatoire system with added thumbplate) and has semi auto 8ves, LH F key, articulated C# and low B-C link. You may have to have the thumbplate added to it as they're not listed as being dual system, so contact Howarth about that.

The next oboe above that is the S40c+TP or S45c+TP which are both semi-pro models with the same spec keywork but lack the split D#-E trill mechanism for RH3. The S40c has the regular diameter joints and the S45c has the wide diameter joints which is a heavier instrument with more resistance, so try them both out to see which suits you best.

The reason why I recommend dual system oboes is you'll find all pro model oboes on offer by the major makers are primarily conservatoire system oboes and they can have a thumbplate added relatively easily (and will also require a repositioned 3rd 8ve key) to make them dual system which is the most popular system in the UK.

Also check used instrument lists and also the famous auction site as sometimes you'll find Howarth S5 or XL oboes listed on there.
