Back in 1965 to 1967 the university I attended had a larilee oboe and I played it for 4 years. It played well and had no problems. Not sure if the recently made instruments are the same quality as the older. I looked at the specs in www.wwandbw.com and the model 400W has all the features found on my Cabart including the 3d octave key.
I think its wrong to think about instruments are beginner, intermediate and professional.
How many oboes will you buy in your lifetime? Will you really feel a need to buy a "pro" instrument in the future? Think of the 400W as a pro instrument if it has all the features of a pro instrument AND if it you can play it as a pro would. A man named Dennis Brain played very good french horn back in the 1950s. In the last 10 years his favorite instrument was analysed and it was not a very good playing instrument by todays standards. But he mastered the instrument and played it as a pro. He also played in concert one time a garden hose and played it well. I believe that the music marketing people came up with the idea of pro, intermediate, beginner to so you would feel the need for multiple purchases.
Bottom line is if the instrument plays intune and plays well and has all the features of a pro instrument then it equals a pro instrument.
If you buy the instrument from a local shop insist on a free 1 year checkup and make sure that it is properly setup in the shop. Also if you could play before you pay would be a great idea.
