GMac -

The reed breaking story is about Tabuteau. He was one of the finest oboists ever, but he was widely known as the worst human being ever. Ty Cobb wasn't even close. His students quickly learned never to show him a good reed.

It wasn't just that he was tough on students. At the first Casals Festival, Louis Cahuzac, probably the world's best clarinetist at the time, simply walked out becuase he couldn't stand Tabuteau. Tabuteau wouldn't play the Strauss Concerto himself and from simple jealousy prevented John deLancie (for whom it was written) from playing it with the Philadelphia Orchestra. A detestable and universally hated man.
