Well that is exactly what my teacher asks of me last time, to play on his broken in reeds....haha...Well the wire thing is sort of different among the schools of playing, the American scrape emphasizes total freedom of vibration (although some argue that the scrape itself has some ideas that contradict the theory, oh well, everyone's personal preferences.), thus the wireless reed. Some styles like the French also promote a wireless reed, but some like the English of German doesnt really bother to say anything too much about wires, some keep them, some don't.
About the high register, i think it's ok to adopt the roll in method (i've read on many occasions that this is an appropriate method when done correctly), i don't know if it's another one of those different concepts between schools (trying to find a balancing point among all teachings here, the excerpts of the similar.), but from what i learned i was never taught to roll in for the high notes. So my suggestion is, you might want to do adjustments to the tongue level. The higher the tongue level, the more resistance there will be, not a negative one, but one that promotes fast air stream, its like when you simply blow air (without anything in your mouth), and you adjust your tongue position, you will hear different pitches of high and low depending on where you put your tongue. (try an u, e, i vowel of the tongue and blow air, you will understand what i mean.) Something like that.
Of course like D-oboe said, practise is always the key, you have to experiment to see what suits and works for you. So keep practising and lets hear from you soon!
