I am happy with the recordings...haha...
I am not too sure, but i've mentioned before that i have attended an intensive 3 day class with a russian style oboist (russian of course!). But unfortunately, he didn't pass on the knowledge of that particular style, and aside from the tone (which i find too abstract to describe) i don't think i can say too much about their playing, the records give a fair description though.
What i can see in his style is, which was certainly much more different from what i heard back then, was that his tone was a bit more edgy, but i guess that must be due to personal preferences of the oboist which i have attended class with, i have a dvd with valery gergiev conducting Rusland Ludmilla, and the oboe section certainly possessed such qualities.
What i can say is that Russian players tend to be a bit more aggresive than the other schools, i might say that's due to the traditional compositions and preferences? But with all the beautiful melodies that Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov composed, i wouldn't say that's true in some sense. From Sergei's (the oboist which i have attended class with) point of view, he played to us the Hinke method, scales and Mozart Concerto with such clarity and perfection but was most often aggresive in articulation and sorts.
His reed was obviously short scrape and very similar to what you can see in the website, and he didn't even bother to put it in water (used saliva to moisten it).
But of course this was only a small portion of what i have witnessed. I am very interested to listen to more of this, Russian school, although it won't seem to be route of sound any where in the future, but it's definitely good!
