Since I don't sell reeds I don't buy new staples very often, but along the way the Glotin staples I've bought from Forrests Music almost always fit my 35 year-old Loree mandrel perfectly.
Almost always, and that includes silver and brass. I tend to use the brass ones these days due to residual influences from an acoustical physics class I took many years ago. From that I do not believe the material makes any real difference in the sound and brass costs less.
I have a mix of silver and brass and do not seem to detect any difference in the results. Cane quality is the biggest factor by far.
If you review the posts I've made to youtube, all those reeds were done on Glotin staples using a variety of cane sources, usually 10-30 years in my possession.

Ok. I realize the ambiguity in that statement. I mean cane in my possession for that period of time.
Staples might be longer in hand in some cases, but I'd say the majority I've had for the last 15 years or less. Newer ones seem fine to me, too.
Sending your mandrel to the staple provider does seems like a good idea to me. I will probably do that in the future. Return misfits for refund or exchanges. Exchanges are the best solution.
And that may be 5 to 10 years from now for me.
Still... order cane in 1/2 to 1 lb. amounts now and in 5 - 10 years it will be as good as it can be.
