I love Al Kleins recordings too, but he is a much better soloist than orchestral player.
Has anyone heard the Chicago recordings with him-Symphony of Psalms, Symphony in C and Symphony in Three Movements? This is the last recording that Solti ever made with the orchestra I think and he sounds tiny and almost insignificant in that orchestra. It is no surprise that he had been asked to beef up his sound more than once. His playing is unfailingly beautiful but it is small and tiny and almost non-existent. Eugene on the other hand has a glorious tone, rich and warm from the bottom to the top of the instrument and it can be heard! I think he is a worthy replacement for Alex Klein and will be admired in that job.
Eugene in no slouch in the competition department either. And if I wasn't mistaken, Al Klein was appointed to the Chicago symphony, he did not audition for the job-which pissed a lot of people off. Even Dick Woodhams was being courted for the Chicago job before Al was appointed.
We're just splitting hairs really, Al is a great player, as is Eugene. We should be lucky to play half as well as these two beasts.
