I agree that if you compare recordings of the two, Alex Klein is much better but also remember that Eugene Izotov is not even 30 I believe (at the oldest, early 30s if I remember correctly from the IDRS article) and most of Alex Klein's recordings are fairly recent I believe, from when he was 45 and later. 15 years makes a huge difference!! I personally believe that Eugene would be a great replacement for Alex Klein because he is a really great musician and I really hope he takes the job.
But man...I wish we could still have Alex Klein...I honestly have never heard recordings before or since that match up to that standard of playing! What an unbelievable musician (note...not just oboist...'musician').
