Regardless of weather conditions --- surprizing coming from me --- the factor that decides if a reed gets easier or harder over time is in the cane itself.
Most "good" cane will make reeds that get easier over time. Clipping off the tip will help, but their playing time (hours played straight) will get shorter. The sound will start off beautiful but will sink more quickly into a buzz as the reed ages.
However, cane that I qualify as "waxy", "soapy"... you know when you scrape it, it doesn't cut or fell normal..... these ones get harder with age. I have always supposed that this cane is just not ripe enough, but it could be other factors in the growth of the plant. Such reeds have actually behaved well for me when I forget them in the soaker for 24 hours!
