Hey everyone,
I have read comments everywhere on this board about how amazing Lorees are and how they are the best, etc etc. Has anybody out there tried a Yamaha? I went to a shop in Toronto today, and tried out many different Lorees (different models/bores) and a Buffet Greenline and none of them even came close to the Yamaha that I'm going to buy. I know that you typically wouldn't think of Yamaha as one of the big oboe manufacturers, but I found these differences between the Yamaha and the rest (and so did the people with me listening)
1) Lower range (F downward) was much less resistant and fuller on the Yamaha
2) Tone was darker and richer overall on the Yamaha. It also sounded 'freer' because you didn't have to push as hard to get a good sound.
4) Sound projected with much less effort on the Yamaha
3) Intonation was stable throughout the entire range (even without a third octave key!)
4) Yamaha is $1500-$2000 cheaper
Just thought you guys might be interested. I would never even have considered a Yamaha if my teacher (Jim Mason) hadn't exposed me to them but I absolutely love it now. If anyone else has compared Yamahas to other pro level oboes, let me know what you think!
