My take is this:
considering the fantastic oboe solos in opera, symphonic and chamber literature, the oboe is definitely NOT a 2nd class instrument!
However, the violin and piano are really more visually entertaining! Seriously, we can wave up and down, left and right, but our hands and arms are stiff and stuck compared to bowed instruments or keyboards. We can't dazzle an audience by slamming the bow or pouncing on a keyboard.
Let's face it: music is show-biz.... just look at how many musical superstars appear like sexy super-models on their posters!
For the soulful musician, the oboe is heavenly... the only drawback being it can only play one note at a time. Why are many oboe tunes rewrite of others? TIME: in the baroque, it was the other way around.
