Ha! That Yano is insane. Martin described it as "one of those pieces that only Alex can play."
I think in terms of solo work, the majority of our repertoire is very lyrical and emphasizes the lyricism, but in terms of orchestral, I don't think we get any "technical breaks". I just played a concert with PHX Symphony a few days and was rudely reminded (by myself) how despite being an experienced musician and a DMA student, my technique is merely "adequate" enough to get buy. Let's just say I got my butt whooped.
In professional orchestras, technique and sightreading is an absolute necessity in daily settings.
