Yeah, the trick, if you want to transfer the video to sound only files, is to do the recording. I can plug my computer into a recording device that has 2 mics and a slough of cable-jack inputs but not everyone has this.
I you have 2 computers, then I suppose you can plug the ear-phone port of one into the microphone port of the other. Though theoretically possible, I would not risk plugging the ear-phone to the mic of the same computer.
Apparently, there is software that allows the output of one program to be sent to the input of another.... haven't researched enough. I know in Linux Jack, QJack and such to the trick.
There is also file format conversion. I THINK the program "SUPER" is supposed to do that well in Windows (freeware), but this is something where research has frustrated me in the past.
