No matter how good your band director is, if he isn't qualified to help you select a new instrument and find your way through the reed jungle, you might want to check into contacting a local professional oboist with experience in these areas. Having said that, there are a lot of threads on this board discussing various oboe brands. Have a look at Peter Hurd's website and you'll get a quick education. The oboe is not an instrument you want to spend many years playing without an excellent experienced oboist for a teacher - bad habits are difficult to change.
