Chiarugi and Chudnow are different staples. I'm not familiar with the former, although Mark does sell them on his site, but I had no interest in them. I've heard people feeling the Chudnow staples were a bit big. I do not have a problem, although they do seem a bit bigger than the Stevens #2 or Pisoni. I think this helps my particular tip opening. I'm using a Joshua +2 shape tied between 73 and 75 mm. I do not shape my own cane, but will start to, as I feel my supplier is sloppy (I'll refrain from naming). I was using a Mack-Peiffer shape, and had to tie between 71 and 73 because of it. I was/am very very happy with the Joshua +2 shape from the get go.
A final point, I think the staple should conform to the oboist, and not the other way around. If you've made 10 reeds, even 6 reeds on a staple, and it doesn't produce good results, move back/on to the staple that was giving you good results. There's a lot of other musical worries, so keep it simple.
I am a beginning oboist, but a veteran woodwind musician. Other professional views may differ.
