Well, having spent time on all woodwinds (flute being my primary, clarinet supposedly being my secondary but well surpassed by oboe!) it seemed much harder to progress on clarinet. Those darn pinky keys! And it is so hard to even make the thing sound good, even with a good setup (I play almost identical setup to my husband, who did clarinet performance in his undergrad).
I think they are both such individual instruments, and I think I ran a thread a while back about personality types for certain instruments. Oboe is such a melodic instrument, and often gets the (best) solos, but particularly in band and a lesser extent in orchestra, clarinets are often called on to be team players - in a band, they essentially replace the violins, so they've got to work together!
