There are a lot of the old Stokowski & His Orchestra recordings being re-released on CD (for very good reason) featuring Robert Bloom. He's one of my favorite oboists and a major influence in my style of playing. Here's a few of my fav recordings:
1) GALA #CACD0546: 'Stokowski conducts a Russian Spectacular'. Highlights include Moussorski's 'Night on Bare Mountain' and the 'Khovantchina Suite' with utterly gorgeous oboe licks.
2) GALA #CACD0522: "Tschaikovsky, Sibelius & Liszt". Bloom's EH on the Swan of Tuonela, and playing oboe on Liszt's Les Preludes and Tschaikovsky's Swan Lake are not to be missed.
Also, the Lifschey recording of cantatas #56 and #82 has been reissued on CD and may still be available from his widow Paula Lifschey. Go to www.marclifschey.com for more details.
Another of my favorite oboists is Harold Gomberg. I am working with a friend to transfer our old vinyl to CD, and hopefully, copyright having expired, we will be able to make those old, wonderful recordings available as well.
Enjoy...
I welcome interest in recordings of those players who, once the Big Dogs in the business, are now history. There are some wonderful performances out there...
