Re: This oboist says you need to buy a new oboe every 2-5 years? What?

Hello all

It seems rather extreme from my experience to change an oboe after 2/3 years.
I have three oboes a Kreul bought secondhand in 1966 and two Marigaux bought about 8 years ago from a friend who had bought them new in 1968 and 1972.

The bores are still perfectly straight and show no sign of wear. The keywork on all is in excellent condition, in need of a polish, but no wear on the plating. I have used the Kreul for amateur, semi professional and some professional playing for over 40 years. None of the instruments have split or cracked. They all play well and intonation is very good. I certainly have no intention of buying new instruments especially hearing the horror stories of people buying new instruments which seem to crack really easily.

Leon Goosens may have been a record holder for the use of one oboe but many professionals in UK seem to play very well on quite elderly instruments.

My main Cor Anglais is an Oehler made in the 1920s - no splits and makes a wonderful sound so there should be plenty of mileage left in my oboes!!

Leigh
