I have never quite understood the wisdom in that time-frame. In my experience, 10 years on oboe 1, 6 years on oboe 2, 25 years on oboe 3, and now 4 years on oboe 4.... and oboe 4 is by far best of the lot.

If in a pro orchestra, I'd want a new oboe to start the break-in every 4 -5 years or so.

Having an older oboe serviced and re-conditioned now and then makes sense, but 2 years out of an oboe.

I think that is nonsense.
