I make long scrape reeds, but I had a student for two years who was using short scrape. What I discovered was that although his reeds LOOKED insane to me - I still can't really understand why that teeny little scrape would allow any vibration at all - I could use my ear the same way I do on my own reeds.

In other words, he would play something or crow, and I would say, "the corners of the tip need to be thinner" or "scrape the sides of the heart" or "polish the heart all the way across" and the result would be what I expected.

So my guess is that all the finishing tricks you will learn and use on long scrape reeds will apply well when you go short again, and that you will find yourself an improved reed-maker from having experimented with our method.
