I guess you are referring to American style reeds making. It is not one. And both are in a way cults. They seem to have deep religious belief in their way of reed making. There are basically two different cults; one is Phli style and the other is Mack style. There is a third one which does not seem to have religious overtone. You can spot it easily. All the scrapes seem to be smooth. The first two seem to have bumps and deep scorched knife techniques.

One of the most methodical description I have seen is at ASU wesite by Martin Schuring http://www.public.asu.edu/~schuring/main.html He also seems to have religious following. You may want to start there.
