I have recovered a number of stolen Loree oboes and English horns for their owners that were offered for sale on the usual auction site.
One late model Loree oboe offered at auction by a pawn shop seem legitimate at the outset. However, the pawn shop had in fact mis-read the tiny Loree serial numbers.
So, the wrong serial number ended up on the card the pawn shop is required to send to the police.
A numeral "9" was indistinguishable from an "8" or a "0" on all three joints due to the extremely rough grain of the wood.
