Craig, you should definitely write a book.
I think that your first idea, Mark, of something in the tone hole, sounds very likely indeed, and is the simplest solution. Take the top keys off of that rod and check it out, especially the top vent key. (I use a Q-tip with some of the cotton removed, dampened with water to keep any loose cotton from fluffing off. I can't say that that's ideal, but it's what I do.) So your middle-of-the-staff C is fine?
Anyway, it's a great opportunity to examine things and maybe get your gouger looked at!
