I personally would use tube cane if you can, because it's less expensive and you have way more control over quality, but if you're not really intent on reedmaking there is no real point in getting a gouging/planing machine. I can personally only recommend tube cane because I never buy anything else! Personally, I would recommend Loree because it's consistent, quite hard (I personally don't like soft cane), usually good colouring, and mostly straight. It's expensive but I think it's worth it. I have also heard very good things about Alliaud and Davie cane.
