In pit band and doubling situations where you need your reeds working in an instant (and you have a little bit of time to do some prep), dip, shake and fit them to the instrument. Then suck the excess water out just before you have to play. There will be enough water coating the reed to make it instantly playable.
But do get there early enough before the downbeat to get your reeds well soaked, crowed and warm up with some playing while everyone's getting ready.
