Hi Coop,
No, you're positively not crazy. Your expression "how the oboe takes the air"
(or how you "spin the air" into the oboe ") is key. "My air is not your air,
your scale is not my scale."
I have now on consignment a Covey oboe. It has an exquisite sound.
However when my oboe professor friend (plays a new Laubin) plays this specific
Covey, she complains about the scale. Another friend, a freelance oboist, plays this same Covey and has no issues at all with the scale. He does complain though that he finds it difficult to transition smoothly through the dynamics from pp to ff. This is my take on this Covey also. I have no issues with the scale, though I too find the increase of dynamic problematic.
A few of the oboes at IDRS that I personally did not care for others praised, and vice versa.
About the only make of oboe that I did hear consistent praise for was the [inexpensive] Armstrong/Ward all plastic professional model. Would be excellent for outdoor use, or use in extreme climates.
Cheers,
Peter
