Hi,

I am well aware of the impact of reeds on Oboe sound production - I have owned 4 oboes: a Fox, a Fossati, a Loree, and now a Marigaux.

The Fossati model I owned back when - was a Tiery. I had no problem with that instrument. It was quite easy to play - and pleasantly the air stream was consistent across both Octave keys.

The Fossati Artist I tried - was a totally different instrument.

Maybe my hyperbole was excessive; however, that particular Artiste Model had a very bad scale - the pitch stability for each note was very poor. The notes did not settle in without great adjustment. Additionally, as I stated the timbre of the instrument was very bright and alive. There was nothing subtle about this particular instrument.

I do not propose that every Fossati Artiste is the same; however, this is my experience with this instrument.

Now the question you raise - could a differently constructed reed make a difference in the tone and response of the instrument - it is possible - but then again I would not want to play on such a reed. You would have to build in characteristics to compensate for all the instrument's nuances which might impinge upon other desirable reed characteristics.
