Howard,
I am a long scrape reed maker ..................
I find the key to maintaining a complex tone and and the same moment having a more flexible - singing upper register is the in the tip blend (center and sides). I assume that the rest of the reed is functioning well and is free blowing and in tune.
The thickness of the middle part of the blend has much control over pitch, and resonance. The the trick is keeping the proper balance with the sides and tip of the blend. It the reed speaks easily and the tone is good - I will scrape the extreme side of the blend to create a clear demarcation. And gradually (depending upon response) scrape the tip in a fan like motion.
If the reed is stuffy in the upper register - I will dust the center of the blend and the sides always maintaining the proper proportions in the tip.
This adjustment is always precarious!
I keep he sides of the blend at 4 mm and the center at 3mm. I us a 45mm staple and my reed length averages 68.5 mm.
