My worst ever, was probably playing Bach's Brandenburg Concerto. (No.1 I think..) at one of those noon-hour things. (At the major concert hall in the city no less!) Anyways there is a trio section with oboes and a bassoon. 3 instruments all solo. I was playing 2nd oboe and COMPLETELY lost my place, and was in shock, so I was too nervous to guess where we were in the music. I was dripping in sweat, and after the piece was over I ran out, and jumped on the metro back to school.
Then, there was the time, when I was just learning to make reeds still, that the youth orchestra was playing the Adagio from Khatchaturian's Spartacus. It has this singing oboe solo. I *could* actually play it...but the night before, the two "reeds" that I thought worked cracked right in half! I had to beg a reed off of one of my older oboe friends. She played on fairly stiff reeds at the time. So I had to play an entire concert ( and the Spartacus was in the 2nd half!) on a reed that was too hard.
My world, embouchure, ego, and reeds were all shattered in the end....
All in all though, I'm glad I had my traumatic experiences in places where my job wasn't depending on it. The best place to mess up is in Youth Orchestras. Then, the worst that happens is you get bumped down a chair!
