Hi Carrie --
I don't know if JJM monitors this board. You might try asking on the Clarinet Board.
English horn is a lot like oboe. If you can play the oboe, you can play the EH.
I have one -- a loaner which is very, very old, and wasn't all that good to begin with. It seems easy to play, in comparison with the oboe. But then, I also thought the oboe was fairly easy. (I played clarinet most of my life, and switched to oboe a couple of years ago.)
English Horns use reeds specifically designed for the instrument, usually available wherever oboe reeds are sold. There is also a bocal to contend with -- a little metal tube that fits into the opening at the top of the instrument. The reed goes on the bocal.
Would it affect your clarinet playing negatively? Only if you fall in love with double reeds (like I did) and decide to bag the clarinet entirely.
Good luck!
Susan
Oh, yeah. Maybe there is a Rubank book for EH?
