I settled into keeping the closed position where the small space between the upper and lower piece is centered on the index finger. Kind of the braile suggestion Mary makes.
It really minimizes the distance of movement needed to effect the half hole.
It also requires getting used to more lateral separation of the fingers into a stretched open position. You'll probably noticed your middle , fourth and little fingers already have to make this adjustment.
So, you are probably only 1 finger away at this point...
