You could also have the whole of the lower plate angled upwards, or the entire lower plate bent to curve upwards (which is a bit more drastic and permanent) by someone who knows exactly what they're doing. They should also make sure tha once the lower plate has been angled or bent to form a curve, there isn't a height difference at the gap when both plates are closed.
